「Drawing Out the Appeal of a Storehouse That Once Remained Behind the Scenes」
Our client, Kawanishi Spirits, had operated as an alcohol wholesaler since it was founded in the city of Osaka in 1915, but now it had plans to open a retail store, selling directly to end users.
It wanted to use the extensive knowledge and experience it had accrued through its history as a wholesaler to present customers with diverse ways to enjoy alcoholic beverages.
Its plan centered on a retail store which would also stock inventory for its wholesale operations.
We wanted to come up with ways to make a store which fostered rich communication between customers and staff, and which brought out the full appeal of Kawanishi Spirits as a liquor storehouse, with shelves of products that extend over customers’ heads.
The main materials we used in our design were steel, mortar, structural plywood, and glass. Our plan used industrial products such as steel racks and refrigerators that drew on the unpretentious, utilitarian allure of the storehouse. At the center we placed an arch-shaped table with its own structural and dynamic beauty, which we created by layering structural cardboard. The end result was a space in which customers, surrounded by alcohol, could enjoy discussing spirits and liquor .
