創業100周年を迎えられた株式会社イムラ封筒の創業の地である古民家を改修し研修の用途を持たせるプロジェクトである。
私たちは歴史を継承し、この先の１００年を語り学び合う場とすべく、
既存建築を部分解体して露出された力強い骨格と茅葺づくりの天井をそのまま使用する計画とし、
古民家の中央を庭に向けて貫通していた通り土間をプラン上の手がかりとして計画を進めた。

研修室は茅葺づくりの特徴である高い断熱・保湿・吸音性能によって優れた室内熱環境と音響環境を確保し、
建物の構造補強を兼ねるコの字型断面の白い壁と天井を入れ子状に貫入させることで、
研修室の機能を補填し、企業の長い歴史とこれからの歴史を表現した新旧の要素が混じり合うデザインとした。

通り土間を挟んで反対側の棟は天井を解体した際に露わになった木造フレームをそのまま用い、
大きな空気量のある空間によって語り合う音が反響し研修室とは異なる華やかな音響環境とした。
新たに吊るされた造作照明によって照らされたテーブルを囲い、企業のこれからの100年について語り合いながら同じ釜の飯を食べる計画とした。

100年以上の時間を経た建築の力強い骨格と当時の優れた熱・音環境対応の仕組みを現代に引き継ぎ、
クライアント企業のこれからの１００年を担う人たちが心地よく仲間と学び語らう場所となった。

「Preserving the History and Features of a Traditional Japanese Home While Creating a Space for Thinking about the Future of the Company」

On the 100th anniversary of its founding, Imura Envelope Co., Inc. launched a new project, converting a traditional Japanese home into a training site.
To create a site that preserved history while providing a space for talking about the future, our design involved partially dismantling the existing building but keeping the sturdy exposed frame and thatched roof. The tori-doma, an earthen path that passed through the home to the center garden, was the linchpin of the design.

The thatched roof over the training rooms ensured a superb indoor thermal and acoustic environment due to its exceptional insulating, humidity retention, and soundproofing properties. The white walls and ceiling interpenetrate each other, producing a u-shaped cross section that provides the building with structural reinforcement while supplementing the functions of the training rooms. The design was a blend of old and new, representing the company’s past history and the history it is yet to create.

On the other wing of the building, across the tori-ma, we disassembled the roof and kept the wooden frame we had exposed to create a large, airy space which rang with the sound of discussion, producing a bright and lively acoustic environment quite unlike that of the training rooms.
Our plan was for building’s users to gather around the tables, lit with suspended lighting fixtures we created ourselves, to talk over a meal about how the company would grow over the century to come.

The training site kept the solid frame and the exceptional thermal and acoustic properties of the building, which dated back over 100 years, refashioning the building into a welcoming place where the people who would shape the next 100 years of Imura Envelope could gather together to learn and share with each other.
